Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has sparked intense national conversation following the successful rescue of dozens of abducted students and teachers, raising questions about the timing of the attack.
Speaking in Bauchi State during a meeting with Governor Bala Mohammed and leaders of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Makinde pointed out a startling timeline: the mass kidnapping occurred less than 24 hours after he officially declared his bid for the 2027 Nigerian presidency.
Governor Makinde highlighted what he considers a highly suspicious sequence of events, noting that Oyo State had enjoyed years of relative safety from mass school abductions until the exact moment he entered the presidential race.
- May 14, 2026 (4:00 PM): Governor Makinde formally declares his intention to run for the 2027 presidency. While a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he secured the consensus nomination under the APM banner.
- May 15, 2026 (9:00 AM): Just 17 hours later, bandits strike three schools in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, taking dozens of captives.
- The Aftermath: The victims—consisting of 46 pupils and teachers—spent 56 days in captivity before being successfully rescued through a coordinated military and Department of State Services (DSS) operation.
